Long jump - Ty Betka second 19- 06.75. for state track meet TornadO threat stretches districts In a district meet stretched to two days by rain, lightning and the threat of a tornado, the Superior track team quali- fied five athletes for the state track meet in Omaha this weekend. The District C-7 track meet was scheduled for Thursday at Heartland High School in Henderson. Sometime well into the event, everyone in atten- dance was forced to seek shelter in the school building when a tornado was sightednear Henderson. After an hour- long break, the storm passed and the meet resumed. Three hours later an- other storm moved in. this time with heavy rain and dangerous lightning, and the meet was called off for that day. The final running events were not held until the next day. Five Superior athletes qualified for state in seven events: Ty Betka. 100- meter, 200-meter and long jump; Derek Isom. discus: Montana Hayes, pole vault: Haley Gebers. high jump; and Holly Bower, discus. State track will be tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at Burke High School in Omaha. Personal bests were achieved at dis- tricts by the following Superior ath- letes: Ty Betka, 200; Josh Heilman,400 and 800; Levi Schultz, 800; TarynBetka, triple jump; Sidney Price, 100; Lyndsay Brown, 400; Chelsea Renz, 400; Holly Wilt, 200; JaCob Hawley, 400; boys 4 x 800 (Levi Schu!tz, Josh Heilman, Nathan Breland an Wes Clyde). "We are excited for these athletes because they have worked hard this season to reach the goal of making it to state track," said coach Carla Hoins. "Montana Hayes is a four-year state track qualifier. That is something to be proud of." Boys team results - St. Cecilia 133, Thayer Central 93.50, Deshler 59, Sandy Creek 51, Doniphan-Trumbull 49.50, Superior 45, Sutton 37, Blue Hill 30, Heartland 29. Girls team results - St. Cecilia 132, Heartland 82.50, Sandy Creek 79.50, Thayer Central 55, Sutton 51, Doniphan-Trumbull 34, Blue Hill 32, Superior 31, Deshler 30. Participants took cover twice last Thursday because of weather conditions. The meet was delayed approximately four hours before being postponed to the next day. As the announcer barked orders for everyone to take cover, Cindy Betka snapped this picture of a tornado.
