::il:/> ;S: ;:!iii!;il}{ili! ::'::: Among the extensive tree and power line damage in Nelson from Saturday night's storm was this enormous tree uprooted on the grounds of the former Good Samaritan Center The powerful wind rushing into the open side of the former North Ward School building which is being converted into an assisted living apartment building was strong enough to blow out one of the eastern sections of the building. iiiiiii!ii This tree at Twelfth and Kansas was snapped off at ground level. While it missed the house it took down utility lines and blocked the street. As proof of the danger posed by those out driving around looking at the storm damage, a utility line covered with black insulation crossed the street at chest level. Fortunately, the line was discovered and marked before someone drove into it. - .... We Sell Rubber Stamps Superior Publishing Co. 148 E. We received many compliments for how it was run. For all post-storm information, p./ease see UNL CropWatch at http:// cropwatch.unl.edu. Last week I did find systemic Goss' wilt in a couple of Clay County fields that had received frost damage. This case was corn on corn where Goss' wilt was found in the field last year. A more resistant hybrid was planted this year but we continue 1o see that plants do not have their . resistance to Goss' wilt in place earlier in the growing season. We observed stunted, dying plants randomly amongst healthy plants. Typical Goss' wilt symptoms of black freckles and shiny exudate were observed on the leaves while a cross- section of the stem showed orange or brown vascular bundles instead of white ones. There is no cure for sys- temic Goss' wilt; worst case scenario in Edgar area last year was a plant stand reduction up to 8,000 plants per acre by harvest. While there are prod- ucts available for foliar Goss' wilt, we recommend before applying them to test them for yourself to determine efficacy via on-farm research. Please let me know if you' re interested in this. A UNL Extension weed science field day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 27 at the South Central Ag Laboratory (SCAL) near Clay Center.
