The t our new cars had their tops mashed in and were returned to Kansas City. The driver ran off the edge of the road and hit a bridge ban- nister while trying to avoid an acci- dent. Stuart Spielman, 22, died He was a resident of the Star community. His death was the result of a head-on colli- sion that injured seven other people. Mankato voters turned down a pro- posal to permit the opening of liquor stores in the town at the municipal election. The vote was 493 against and 265 in favor of the proposal. There were no liquor stores in Jewell county. Royal Rodgers retqmed home after a year of service in Korea, Mrs. M. Bartholomew received painful burns when she fell and lay for some time on a floor furnace register. She was expected to recover. Edith Ely, 79, died. She was an 1894 graduate of Jewell high school. A Piper Cub plane piloted by Freddie Chandler, livestock auction- eer, with Mike Wilson, a "Kansas Farmer" representative, as a passen- ger made two landings because of poor visibility. The first landing was near Jewell and the second was near Mankato. The plane was damaged in the second landing and was left for repairs. The pair were returning to To- oeka from a trip to Hays. 40 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Fay Vestal celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The Hawthorne Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the club at the Buffalo Roam Steak House. Arnold Rose, Ionia, received a bro- ken wrist and bruises as the result of a fall from a building near his home. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hesting, Burr Oak, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. Clara Pierce died. She was a life- long resident of the Northbranch com- munity. Donald Bartcher died. He was rasied in the Odessa neighborhood. Sam Colson, Mankato and a stu- dent at Kansas University, broke the meet record at the Texas Relays with a throw of 281 feet in the javelin. The old record was 270' 1.25" set in 1959. The roof of the county shop at Mankato suffered extensive damage when high winds struck the building. A 70 foot long section of corrugated roofing was blown off the structure. The Mankato Girl Scout held a Men- tal Health Walk-A-Thon and had 71 participants. The group walked the I I miles from Mankato to the Jewell County State Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hughes cel- ebrated their 50th wedding anniver- sary. Lyle Hafferty, 47, died. He had been the Mankato postmaster since 1960. Helen Stafford, 80, died. She served as the city treasurer of Mankato for 32 years and was a vice-president of the State Exchange bank. 20 Years Ago Ky Oplinger was named the Jewell County Young Woman of the Year. The Jewell County Hospital and Long term Care celebrated their 25th anniversary. Rick Callaway began work at the Jewell Grocery as a meat cutter: Florence Steele, Jewel I, entered Re- public County Long Term Care, Belleville. Carroll Hajny, 62, died. He was born near Esbon and lived ill Jewell County lor most of his life. Newell Dtmn, 75, died. He was a resident of Jewell County and Supe- rior. Reeve Hawkins, 87, died. He was a "long -time Jewell County resident. United School District No. 278, Mankato announced the employment of Rod Dietz as superintendent of schools. The Mankato Fire Department re- sponded to a grass fire at Greene Farms, Jewell, About 19 large round bales were destroyed and approximately 30 to 40 acres of grass land was burned. Sam Bowles, a senior at Jewell High School was awarded a Kansas State University $1,200 foundation scholar- ship. Dora Bailey, Jewell, celebrated her 90th birthday. Mannie Loomis, 82, died. He was a life-long Jewell County resident. Derrick (Rick) Duffy was appointed postmaster at Burr Oak. Marilyn Smith, Mankato, was named as care manager in Jewell County. Brian Murray, Mankato, was in- jured at the KDOT shop. Heattempted to remove a loader when the boomer (a device used to tighten chains) hit him in the mouth. He received four frac- tures to his upper jaw, two chipped teeth and another was knocked out. Vernie Hendrix retired from the Mankato school system after 22 years as a teacher and coach. Gladys Higbee, 92, died. She was a long-time Formoso resident. The Whi e Rock High School news- paper recycling center was open. Hal Totten, Ionia, celebrated his 80th birthday. Dale Crangle, 92, died. He retired frorn the United States Geological Sur- vey and lived in Mankato. Vurl Thomas, 72, died. He was a farmer in Jewell county for many years. Rain and cold weather led to the postponement of several track meets. Jewell received about an inch of snow.
