14A THE SUPERIOR EXPRESS Thursday, September 1. 2011 Lawrence-Nelson Higi School Volleyball Team This year's Raider football team young The Lawrence:Nelson High School football season began Friday because they are among the schools that have a "week zero" game, which allows some schools to play a week early and thea using a "bye" week during the regular season. Brian Blevins, second-year Raider head coach, said he has 20 players on, the roster this season, one fewer than a year ago. The interesting part of that, statistic, however, is that 15 of the 20 players are freshmen or sophomores. With the loss of senior David Kimminau, who is still recovering from surgery on a knee injured last season, there are only three seniors on this year's team. Coach Blevins said the number of younger players has made for slower installation of plays, ideas and con- cepts in the preseason practices. "Although we are young, many of the aspects that has made Lawrence- Nelson so successful are still present," Blevins said. "Those being a work ethic, a refusal to accept defeat, a love for contact and a competitive attitude and effort." The Raider football roster for 2011 is as follows: Seniors - Jared Kucera, 155; T J Kahman 230; Jacob Himmelberg 150. Juniors - Levi Schroer 140; Wyatt Weichman 165. Sophomores - Dan Schroer 140; Brandon Ward 150; Jon Doty Jr. 150; Cole Epley 135; Chase Ehlers 235; Josh Himmelberg [35; Seth Kathman 195; Mike Jacobitz 140. Freshmen - Brandon Skinner 110; Dillon Menke 145; Wyatt Thayer 130; Jimmy Mazour 130; Austin Mundorf 120; DakotaThayer 215; Jared Schendt 150. The Lawrence-Nelson High School volleyball team returns three starters from last year's state championship team: the Lady Raiders won the school's first state volleyball title last November with a five-set win against Sterling in the D-2 state tournament finals. The team's returning starters, all seniors, are Kelsey Biltoft. a 6-1 middle blocker: Kenzee Kucera, a 5-3 setter; and Kasandra Fanning, a 5-6 outside hitter. "Replacing five starters from the 2010 state championship team will be challenging," said head coach Michelle Harrington. "We return three players who were big contributors, and I feel we can put a solid team on the floor that can challenge to repeat as conference champions and push to a repeat ap- pearance at state this year." Harrington is in her ninth year as head coach for the Lady Raiders and has a record of 161-53 there. Other players to watch this season, according to Harrington, are senior Brittney Skinner. 5-8 middle blocker; junior Ashley Buescher, 5-6 right side hitter; sophomore Samantha Burger, 5-5 outside hitter; and sophomore Malika Wood, 5-4 outside hitter, Three freshmen also made this list: Carlie Mazour, 5-5 outside hitter; Maekayla Ward, 5-5 setter; and Kristen Dunn, 5- 6 right side hitter. Raiders drop season opener in Milligan The Lawrence-Nelson Raider var- sity football team struggled Friday- evening, dropping their season opener to Exeter-Milligan 64-0 in Milligan. This year's Raider squad is a very young team, consisting of mostly fresh- men and sophomores, and only two of their three seniors on theaeam suited up in Friday's loss. Exeter-Milligan lost to the Raiders last season but were expected to be improved this year with five seniors and four returning starters on both of- lense and defense. They did, however. have to replace their top quarterback and running backs. The 0-1 Raiders will face Heartland Lutheran Friday at 7 p.m. in Lawrence.
